Here are some tweaks to smooth out ur gameplay in renegade. I just figured these out and they work smoothly. I get around 89 ping 150 kbps. Very good for playing, so far no gameplay pending signals either, but they are easily possible.
Start Internet Explorer
Select Tools | Internet Options | General tab
Under Temporary Internet Files click the Settings button.
In the box for the amount of disk space to use, enter a value between 5 and 80 megabytes.
Click OK to accept the changes
Windows XP has a lot of new cool looking visual elements, however, those new elements take up more RAM and cause your computer to be less responsive. By tweaking your graphics settings, you can increase the performance of your computer.
To get started, Let's reduce the color quality. This setting determines how many colors are displayed on your screen.
Right click on your desktop and select properties.
Click on the settings tab and adjust the color quality drop down box to Medium (16 Bit).
Click OK.
Next, let's use the windows performance settings to optimize your computer for performance. This will revert back to the old Windows 2000 look as well as take away a lot of the fancy graphics effects. However, if you are really into performance, this is the price you have to pay.
Right click on the My Computer icon on your desktop or in your start panel and select properties.
Next, Click on the Advanced tab and hit the setting button under performance.
On the visual effects tab, select Adjust for Best Performance and hit OK.
Hit OK once more to exit system properties.
Go to run type in ipconfig /release (there is a space between ipconfig and /release) than go back to run again and type in ipconfig /renew (there is also a space between ipconfig and /renew.
Go into My Computer and go into your hard drive.
2. Right-click anywhere that a file is not and select the 'New' submenu and click 'Text Document'
3. Name it "deleteprefetch"
4. Double-click on the text file you just created.
5. Type "del C:\Windows\Prefetch\*.* /Q" (without the quotes).
6. Go to File > Save As... and choose "All Files" from the "Save as Type" box and save it as "deleteprefetch.bat"
7. You just created a batch file that will automatically delete all the files in your Prefetch folder. Congrats.
That prefetch is something that is recommended to do, that will delete unused files.
This will help drasticaly

AHaha... I am an UBA n000b what is Ping? is that like your "Ping Pong score?"
|
yes! round trip of one icmp in milliseconds.
you <===> server
Lets have less of the "oh do this and it will lower your ping". Heres the only thing that some people seem to believe as apparently an opinion isnt enough
http://www.renegadewiki.com/index.php?title=Lag#PING
Here's the obvious- UK is quick, USA is slower. Thats geography for you.
Pinging www.zen.co.uk [212.23.2.21] with 32 bytes of data:
Average = 33ms
Pinging www.n00bstories.com [67.19.143.3] with 32 bytes of data:
Average = 147ms
Disabling interleaving (ask your ISP) might increase your performance but again, this falls into the "bit bewtween you and the gameserver".

I know by a long experience that those tricks you posted will not help MY situation c0vert (but it may help someone's). Thank you anyway.
The only thing related to the connection is the ipconfig command. That should help me and maybe everyone (I need to check) because by doing that </release> / </renew> will close all "phantom" connection on your network, and that will surely lower your ping if there was any. For "phantom" connection I mean connections not yet closed with some server or some other pc (like when using a peer2peer program, it will take some time to close all connections established with other people even if you close the p2p application), but not needed anymore.
To do the same somehow easier and to access other tweaks you can use the free and small Driverheaven's TuneXP 1.5, but don't expect to get a new pc performance with this or any other tweaker, the best thing is to mess the less you can with your system and to update drivers often.
I also suggest you to use cFosSpeed, an internet connection optimizator which will control your traffic continuosly to not get it choked by uploads/downloads. The most clear advantage you'll get, is a better web surfing speed.
I'll check how and if it performs better with that ipconfig thing.

Hey Phaz,
I was wondering why I dont see this problem- its because I dont have a desktop wallpaper set. As you do, you need to do this:
1. Click on Start
1. Choose Control Panel
2. Click on System Icon
3. Choose the "Advanced" tab, click "Settings" under "Performance"
4. Under the "Visual Effects" tab , check Use Drop Shadows for Icon Labels

I just looked at the report and then went on a hunt at the respective sites (e.g. Intel, ATI etc.).
I found 1 free tool that will scan & update but it involved installing an activex control so I stayed well away! I cant find any free tools that do such a thing.....

Another tweak is to use something called nlite http://www.nliteos.com/
With this software you can create a very streamlined XP installation CD. Generally speaking you read your existing XP CD, then customise it by:
Removing lots of software from the OS that you know you will not use.
Applying various tweaks that reside in the registry.
Integrating patches via Windows Updates.
Integrating software drivers for your hardware.
All of this is doable via the wizard-like structure of the program.
The only downside to doing this is that if you create a new CD and you attempt to install from it and it all goes wrong, you have to install the vanilla XP again and create a CD again, hoping that you have fixed whatever went wrong previously. I suppose you could test the nlite CD in a VM but that isn't 100% reliable. Dual booting will be an option however. I must admit that every CD I have created has worked everytime- but there are some options within nlite that can screw up an install if you're not careful. I think you just need to read about each option and know why your ticking/unticking an option.
I've reduced my XP installation CD from around 550MB to 200MB. This means that not only am I saving a bit of disk space- I am also avoiding having a whole load of crud that I never use installed. I have also noticed a big improvement in overall system speed.

Thought id post a couple of extra tweaks. These might (not) work for you....
Startup the Renegade Config tool (can be found at C:\Westwood\Renegade\WWConfig.exe)
click on the performance tab and then tick the Expert Mode box.
Turn particle detail and character shadows to low (far left). Set everything else to high. Set Lighting Mode to Multi-texture lightmaps and the Texture Filter to either Trilinear or Anisotropic.
You should find that hopefully your fps will go up generally but crucially during high action moments you dont lag quite as much. Earlier today GDI were attacking our HON and everyone was lagging inside it (FPS to under 5) - mine was at around 20... so still not perfect but a great improvement.
The other thing you can try is to turn vsync off (differs per video vendor).
It appears that good graphics card <> high settings for best experience
